The school nurse assesses students for illness, provides first aid, administers medications, provides vision and hearing screenings and coordinates medical eligibility for student's participation in physical education class and school sports. Students should see the school nurse when ill or in need of any medical attention. Students cannot be released from school due to illness unless they have been seen by the nurse.
Parents/guardians are asked to update emergency contacts if they change by contacting us at Parent Portal ESM Schools or (315) 434-3344. It is important we have updated information to contact a parent/guardian for a student illness, injury or an emergency.
Please carefully check the information on the student data verification form that is sent to every student's home each August/September. Completion of these forms annually will ensure that the most up-to-date information is on file in the Health Office.

Administration of Medications

Whenever possible, medication should be given at home. If a medication must be given at school, New York State law mandates the process to follow before any medication, including over the counter medications eg. Tylenol/ibuprofen can be administered. The health and wellness of our students is a priority at ESM. Physical examinations are required and Dental certificates are recommended for students in grades Pre-K, K, 2, 4, 7, 10 and all new entrants to the District. It is recommended that children receive the physical from their own physician, but school physicians, assisted by school nurses, can perform these examinations. Annual physicals are also required for all students participating in any athletic program.

Parents and guardians are reminded that under FERPA (Family Educational Right to Privacy Act), the school nurse may disclose health alerts involving students to individuals who have a “legitimate educational interest” or that “need to know” the student's health situation.
